Poetry Project 2017: 01/31

Headlines: Trump signs order to close US border to citizens of 7 nations, the World reacts.  White-male terrorist shoots-up Mosque in Quebec City, Canada mourns.

Helpless, Useless, Powerless,
Weakling, Spineless, Gutless,
Lying depressed in a corner
What can I do? How can I help?
I am nothing, nobody.
The tension of humankind feels high
We're standing on a cliff, afraid.
Suffering, crying, hopeless?
What can we do? How can we help?
the Divisions will harm us
there are no Divisions

Raise your voice up!
In defense of yourself,
in defense of others,
realize that is the same.
We're all just hurt creatures pathetically bumbling toward extinction.
We're in this together,
whether you like it or not.
Stop screaming into the abyss,
start screaming at injustice.
Shout out against all de-equalizing forces.

Wait, no.
Don't scream, don't cry, don't empathize.
Speak calmly and boldly.
Stand strongly and firmly.
Move forward together, with love.
Stare down the divisions and unite.
Side by side
                           by side, by side
                                                    by side, by side
with your follow human-beings
Don't back down.

It's not about countries, borders, colour, gender, culture, age, religion,
It's about us.
We're all more alike than different.
There is only one.
One planet, one home, one humankind.

Protect your own!
They are all your own.
Help your own!
They are all your own.
Keep the bad people out!
Out of where?
Where do we draw the arbitrary line?
What arbitrary people does that apply to?
Who's born bad?

Economy, growth, jobs, money, wealth, More!
We only need so much to survive.
Rather than growth,
what about redistribution?
Rather than greed,
what about generosity?

I know you know.
I know there is more good than bad here.
So let's stand together, strongly, firmly,
supporting each other.
Speaking calmly, yet boldly.
Compassion, not hate, not division.

What can I do?
I can use my voice.
I will remember.
I will record.

  1. Thought provoking. It makes me think of “be the change you want to see in the world”. Which I thought was word-by-word literally a quote by Mahatma Gandhi, but I found an article that claims those were not his words, although what he actually said has the same meaning. Thank you for moving my mind. 🙂
